Physical Rehabilitation Services

Ottumwa Regional Health Center Rehabilitation Services work with patients, clients, families and employers, in a 10-county area. We evaluate work and living areas to determine what skills each person needs to live independently and at their highest function level. Our fully-equipped Physical Rehab Center helps clients reach their rehabilitation goals without taking them miles out of their way. Clients range in age from pediatrics to geriatrics.

Our team of experts is fully certified in the latest rehabilitation techniques. Those areas include:

Physical therapy focuses on restoring function, relieving pain, and preventing disability following a disease or injury. We do this through therapeutic exercise, strength and flexibility training, gait training, traction, electrical stimulation, whirlpool, posture evaluation, myofascial release, ultrasound, massage, and heat/cold physical agents.

Occupational therapy provides information and exercises designed to help the person, affected by impairment or injury, handle the physical challenges of daily life. Our occupational therapists work with each client to improve muscle strength, range-of-motion, physical endurance, impaired eye/motor coordination, sensory integration, impaired concentration or thought organization.

Our Lymphedema Therapy Program is centered upon Comprehensive Decongestive Physiotherapy (C.D.P.), recognized worldwide as the most effective treatment for lymphedema.

Speech and language pathology centers around helping clients communicate after a serious accident, stroke or illness. Therapy covers memory, articulation, swallowing, stuttering and language skill enhancement. Sign language and electronic communication boards are also used to help clients with limited speech to communicate more completely.

Our Orthotics and Prosthetics specialist works closely with patients to meet their specific needs; to fit and fabricate artificial limbs for arms and legs, to devise and fit orthopedic braces such as for foot and ankle, to devise and fit custom and orthopedic shoes. Although a physician's prescription is required, our Certified Prosthetist/Orthodist will provide a free initial evaluation.

Our Industrial Rehabilitation team works with businesses and employees to ensure that both stay healthy and work safely. The six services we offer can significantly reduce the occurrence and severity of musculoskeletal work injuries and ensure a timely return to work for injured employees. Those services are:

Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE): Cost effective, objective information about a worker's maximum abilities, as well as projection on eight-hour day performance.

Work Conditioning: Physical conditioning and work simulation to ensure a safe, quick return to work and prevent further injury.

Job Site Analysis: Evaluation of physical relationships between workers, the work, and your worksite to identify problem areas and prevent injury and illness.

Functional Job Descriptions: Expert help with developing honest, fair job descriptions in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Prework Screening: Potential workers are evaluated on the critical physical demands of the job and their ability to safely meet those demands.

Education and injury Prevention: Programs cover anatomy, exercise, body mechanics and ergonomics, and much more tailored to meet your industry needs.

Sports Medicine Services - Our Athletic Trainers work closely with athletes and coaches to prevent injuries, optimize performance, and return injured athletes to competition as soon as possible. Our trainers work with school sponsored, recognized, and sanctioned sports activities at both high school and college levels.
